Anti-slackers: Longmont’s Slackline Express balances business and pleasure

Under the shade of a stately silver maple in Longmont’s Collyer Park, Joe Kuster sways his hips back and forth, arms outstretched as if he is surfing. He folds his arms and does a few deep knee drops like a Cossack. He then squats cross-legged, ultimately resembling a Buddha in a state of meditation.

What’s remarkable is that Kuster is pulling off all these moves while bobbing and wavering atop a “slackline” only an inch wide.

Slacklining is a sport in which enthusiasts attempt to balance, walk or perform tricks on a piece of nylon webbing, usually stretched between two trees a couple of feet above the ground.

Scull and tones: Longmont rowing club offers fun, low-impact workout

“Longmont Sculling Club is not really a racing club, we are more focused on getting people out on the water,” McCabe says.

The club is designed to suit the needs of any rower, regardless of skill level or commitment. Club members have access to boats stored at the reservoir, and if they choose to they can attend regular classes and coaching sessions.

“If you just want to paddle around and look at the birds you can do that,” McCabe says. “If you want to get your butt kicked and give yourself a really hard work out you can do that, and everything in between.”

The last resort: Greenwood seeks to prepare animals kept illegally for life in the wild

Non-profit Greenwood is Colorado’s largest wildlife rehab center, treating some 3,000 birds and mammals every year, most of them the kind of common species — songbirds, squirrels, raccoons and foxes — that don’t attract the attention of large carnivores or raptors. Animal-care areas of the center are not open to the public.

Midnight flyers: Snowboarders head to high country under cover of night

Red and green tracers from a Roman candle cross in front of the full moon’s cloud-veiled ghost, then pop and fade into the night sky. A chorus of cheers rises from the crowd that has gathered in a parking lot on Colo. 6, about a mile past Loveland Ski Area, for a moonlight ride. Across [...]
