Longmont Kmart to close after 30 years in business

A Longmont Kmart store that has been in operation since 1975 will close on May 9.

Employees at the store at 2151 Main St. in Longmont were told on Wednesday of the pending closure.

A Kmart spokeswoman confirmed the coming closure on Friday.

“We continually evaluate our store holdings, and business reasons indicated that it would be appropriate to close the store,” Kim Freely said.

The 59 employees will be notified of openings at other area Kmarts. Those who are eligible will receive severance payments, Freely said.

Liquidation will begin Feb. 21.

The Longmont store is the only one in Colorado that is closing, Freely said. Kmart operates 17 stores in Colorado, including locations in Broomfield, Brighton and Thornton.
