Lucille Alice Laura (Gerndt) Helm of Longmont died Oct. 10 of natural causes in Greeley. She was 96.
She was born Dec. 29, 1912 on a farm near Birnamwood, Town of Aniwa, Wisc., to Ervin and Martha Tech Gerndt. She married Edgar Helms on June 10, 1931 in New London, Wisc.
She worked in the New London area as a seamstress and housekeeper until her marriage. After marrying, she farmed with her husband until 1968 and also worked as a homemaker and mother.
She was active in Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Loveland and enjoyed gardening, cooking, sewing, reading and discussing current events.
She is survived by her daughters: Doane “Dewey” (Robert) Kositzke, Appleton, WI; Karen (Lanny) Prahl, Lakewood, CO; Faith (Larry) Liebzeit, Appleton, WI; sons: Mark Helms, Greeley, CO; Sheldon (Jeanne) Helms, Rescue, CA; 23 grandchildren: Robert, Randal, and Ryan Kositzke, Cindy Kositzke, Troy, Parrish, Travis and Nathan Helms, Christine (Helms) Hermanson, Susan (Helms) Ping, Alan Helms, Lebana (Prahl) Shrum, Melea (Prahl) Rusk, Chayil and Kohen Prahl, Brian and Ethan Liebzeit, Tammy (Helms) Fink, Trevor and Eric Helms, Marisa (Helms) Atwood, Sara (Helms) Ross, Aaron Helms; 34 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and brother, Gerhardt “Zig” Gerndt of Berthoud, CO.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar; sons Alden and Keith; daughter Betty Helms; grandson Rick Kositzke; son-in-law Robert (Dewey) Kositzke; and daughter-in-law Lois (Alden) Helms.
Visitation 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, October 18, at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel, with family present to greet friends. Funeral service 11 a.m. Monday, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 1221 W. 17th Ave., Longmont. Interment Foothills Gardens of Memory. Share condolences at www.ahlbergfuneralchapel.com.
