I have a confession to make. Over the past four months, I’ve been working hard to do less. For a chronic over-functioner like yours truly, it really has been hard work to learn how to do less.

But as the long summer days roll on, I’m happy to report I’m making progress. In fact, I’ve crossed a threshold into a successful transition to doing less.

What brought this on? Simple – I was relieved of a long-term project that was no longer a good fit for me or the other party. At first, I panicked and launched into my familiar hit-the-ground running mode, frantically sending in resume after resume, scouring my social networking connections for leads and useful introductions.

I did this for about a month, but soon realized that my efforts were without much meaning other than filling my time and paying the bills. I wanted to take this time to reassess the direction I’ve been going in and whether it’s a direction I wanted to continue, or whether this break in job activity could be used for a different, and possibly, deeper purpose.

So I stopped sending out resumes and decided that this summer, I’d concentrate on being less “busy” with the things that tend to fill up our days. If you’re employed, that usually translates into work. If you’re unemployed, under-employed or between projects, this usually translates into frantically looking for the next gig.

I needed to admit that I was tired and deserved a much needed break. OK, I admitted that to myself and my family. We all agreed that I was long overdue for a rest and decided this was the summer I could gently take my foot off the “looking for work” pedal.

Easier said than done.

At first, I filled my days with gardening, which I wrote about recently. I filled several large garbage bags with dandelions (only a handful dared to come back); I seeded and watered and now am beginning to enjoy some of the early bounty from that labor. I even thought about going back to school to study horticulture and spend my days with my cuticles in the dirt, but I stopped myself because it was part of the same frantic cycle.

Can’t find a job? It’s an attractive idea to go back to school to learn some new tricks. But it feels too much like the same compulsion to fill my time, rather than time filling me.

I know this sounds New Age-y and that’s all right with me because I know I’m not alone in jumping off the express train. I talk to many other like-minded folks who are re-evaluating the ways in which we put together our work life with more thoughtfulness, balance and purpose. I named my consulting business “One Purpose PR & Communications” because I wanted it to be clear that finding purpose was at the center of what I do.

Why am I writing this? Because I want to share what has been a very interesting time in my professional development. By giving myself this brief gift of time, this self-prescribed mini-sabbatical, I’ve been doing something critical. This gift of time has allowed me to decompress from years of hard and mostly non-stop effort. To take the pressure off of being a “performer” has opened up a side of myself that has never really emerged and one that will serve me, whichever direction I end up going in.

I’ve become more thoughtful, more internal, and, I think, an easier person to be around. I’ve relieved myself from “making things happen” to “letting things happen” and the incredible thing is that things are definitely happening.

The wonderful author Tillie Olsen once wrote: “And when is there time to remember, to sift, to weigh, to estimate, to total?” We live in a world which makes time a commodity and sometimes, the real value of our time is not in the doing, but in the being.

So if you run into me on the tennis courts, or immersed in a crime novel at one of our local coffee joints, please say hi and stop to chat. I’m happy to say, these days, I have the time.

I attended my first track meet this weekend. Hundreds of children, ages 4 through 14, competed in a variety of track and field events. Among those competing was one of my daughters, who has shown a bit of a fast running streak and is participating in Longmont’s CARA track summer program.

My daughter took one look at the stands filled with people, she looked onto the field to what appeared to be a sea of kids, turned to me and said, “I don’t want to do it.” I have to admit that when we walked into the arena, it was definitely daunting.

Lisa Trank is owner of One
Longmont home for close to 10
years and is thrilled to be running
her business and raising her family

I took a deep breath. Holding her hand, I said, “Let’s go find Coach Rachel and see what she says.”

We walked to our designated area and found the coach. She took my daughter by the hand and told her she did her first track meet at the same age. She also told her she had been really nervous, but once she did her first event, she’d see how much fun it was. I could see my daughter’s body relax and waved good-bye to them as they headed toward the standing long jump area with a few of the other little girls.

Thirty minutes later, my daughter arrived back at the bleachers holding a red ribbon high up in the air for me and her sisters to see. She handed it to me, a huge smile on her face. Second place. I hugged her and she drank down some water.

Coach Rachel asked her if she wanted to do the 50-meter shuttle relay. She said, “Sure!” and ran off with the rest of the relay team.

After that was a fifth place run in the 50-meter race. As soon as she crossed the finish line, she yelled across to me, “I want to do the 100!”

The day was really hot and her sisters decided to stay in the shade for her last race of the day. I headed off to where the girls were running the 100 and found a close spot near the finish line. I squinted down the line. First the four and 5-year-olds, who won the crowd with their grit and cuteness. Next to run where the 6- and 7-year-olds, who blew me away with their focus and speed. Finally came my daughter’s age group and I could see her I the third wave. By the time she got to the start, she’d redone her ponytail at least three times and I had to laugh as she looked back at the kid behind her to tell her to give her some space.

The starter shot the cap gun and they were off. I tried to not yell, but I heard my voice shouting out loud to encourage her on as she ran her heart out. I also tried to not cry, but when I saw her look sideways at the girl in the next lane and dig down deep to push herself to a third place finish, I let the tears flow.

At the beginning of the day, a terrified young girl entered a high school football field. One standing long jump and three running races later, a different young girl walked out – one with a straighter spine and her four ribbons held tight in her hand.

What does all this have to do with running a business?

This: From the moment we conceive of our business to when we open our doors, we face the unknown, just like the kids did on that track field this weekend. The choices we make involve taking risks, trying new things and ultimately, being willing to cross the finish line. In fact, every day we open our doors, we run a new race and cross new finish lines. Sometimes we forget that. It took a field full of brave young kids to remind me that crossing the finish line is as simple as putting one foot in front of the other. We just have to take that first step.

I recently had the privilege of sitting in a series of interviews for a VP-level position at an organization where I’m doing some PR consulting work. With the exception of one person, every candidate that walked through the door had at least 10-15 years of solid experience specific to the job description. I, along with the other interviewers, saw this bounty of experience as a good thing, and we were overwhelmed by how many qualified people live in our area. We were relieved that we could make a hiring decision based on more subtle decisions of style and how that person would fit with the mission and vision of the organization, rather than struggling to find one with the right level of experience.

A highly qualified and experienced colleague who has been on an aggressive job search for more than a year related a response she got from a hiring manager when she applied for a “creative” position within their organization. She was told that they were looking for a “punk rocker, spiky haired, multiple pierced” kind of candidate. Without missing a beat, because that’s the kind of lightning wit that comes with age, she said, “You mean, younger?” The hiring manager weakly smiled and thanked her for her time.

Sure, I’ve read the articles on how expensive it is to hire “older” workers, from salary and promotion expectations, to being set in our ways, to being technology-challenged, to more health-related needs that could impact benefit payouts. My response to that? Baloney.

In my ideal workplace of today, I’d like to see a true intergenerational mix since both younger and older workers have much to learn from one another and both bring a different and equally important energy that can enrich the work environment.

But for now, it appears that older workers and older out-of-workers have a choice. We can either sweep all that we have worked for under the rug, dress younger and sweat harder, or we can stand up in our cubicles and declare our age for the workplace world to hear. Our generation has impacted huge societal shifts, so why shouldn’t we expect that we could have the same kind of impact on hiring and employee retention practices that are downright unfair and discriminatory?
I love to garden. I don’t know if I’m any good at it, but I try hard and only the season will tell whether my efforts will reap a bountiful harvest. As I’ve been planning my vegetable and flower plots, I’ve been struck by how many similarities there are between sowing a garden and building a business.

Preparing the soil: Sometimes, we have to learn the hard way. After too many gardening disasters where I’ve just stuck some starter plants into the dirt, I’ve learned how important it is to prepare the soil. So I’ve grown to love the early steps of digging, pulling dandelions, turning the soil over and being thrilled at the sight of earthworms. We’re lucky in our house because our kids attend an Eco-cycle Green Star school. Over the last two years we’ve been the recipients of the richest compost that has come from the school’s cafeteria. I’ve watched my clay-packed, unyielding dirt turn into rich soil with just a few shovels of compost. How does this relate to business? I like to think of the days before opening a business as being the time we are preparing the soil. The digging? Market research. Pulling dandelions? Lead generation. Earthworms? Finding the folks who help pave your way.

Designing the garden: Every spring, I get a vision of my garden, from the vegetables I imagine sinking my teeth into, to the cheery flowers I want to welcome our friends, family and neighbors. I walk around our front and back yard and assess what survived from last year, what needs replacing and what needs to be re-imagined. One of the most important decisions I made when planning both the vegetable and flower gardens was to make them sustainable, water-responsible and easy to maintain. These goals are not too dissimilar to how I planned and run my consulting business and I’d suggest that the time we take in planning our gardens would be a wise approach to starting and running your business.

Planting the seeds: This year I tried something different and began a sprouting garden. Three flats of seeds became three flats of buds and every day my family watched with excitement and patience to see which seeds were sprouting. After a few weeks, we tenderly planted the sprouts, only to have one last Colorado spring snow hit hard. After the snow melted, we waited to see which little sprouts made it and which didn’t. About half of the sprouts survived. When we start a business from scratch, many of our early efforts reach fruition and some end up like some of my little sproutlings. There are lessons to learn from both our successes and failures and we have to plan for both.

We are lucky to live in a community that is home to so many wonderful local farmers and I’m constantly talking to them about their techniques at the Farmer’s Market, as well as how they weather the good and the down times. There’s much to learn from a life dedicated to living in rhythm with the earth, and we can take the lessons from our gardens into our businesses. Happy gardening!

As a marketing professional, I’ve written plenty of print and electronic newsletters and receive more than my inbox can handle. They also are a great way to generate prospective new customers and create brand loyalty among existing ones.

Unfortunately, all too often, e-newsletters are deleted before they even get read for some very basic, avoidable, reasons. I’ve put together a top 10 list of basic rules to consider when creating your electronic communications that will get and keep your newsletter at the top your customers reading list:

Less is more: When it comes to content, remember that your customers are as busy as you are, so keep the number of your articles to no more than three per issue. Launching a new product or business service? Let that be your lead story, or another item you’d like your readers to remember, such as new employees, awards or articles featuring your company. If you’re overflowing with content ideas, don’t cram it all into one issue or you’ll overwhelm (and lose) your readers. Instead, catalogue your ideas into an editorial calendar for a more strategic publishing approach.

Grab the spotlight: Spend time on creating catchy article titles and with attractive images that support your storylines, or tape a two-minute video describing your new product, promotion or contest. Your readers will appreciate the variety and you’ll get to showcase your multi-media know-how.

Stand out from the crowd: Your e-newsletter is a terrific way to support your brand integrity and fluidity. While you can opt for a template, creating a custom one won’t take that much more effort and will drive home your company’s look and feel into your customers and prospects inbox.

Generosity is key: Your electronic newsletter is a terrific way to display your level of expertise. Invite an expert in your field, or link to another article of interest (with the writer’s or publisher’s permission) for a variety of voices and points of view.
Through seeing what works for others, as well as what doesn’t, chances are you’ll find inspiration for your own online publications.

Be respectful: This is my own personal pet peeve: always ask permission before adding someone to your electronic newsletter distribution list. Most of the time if you ask, you’ll receive a yes, but don’t assume that because you’ve exchanged business letters that this entails an agreement to receive your e-newsletter.

Track your moves: Take the time to create a search engine optimized (SEC). Create plenty of chances for readers to contact you with a clearly placed contact information.

Consistency is everything: At the same time you’re creating your editorial calendar, create a publishing calendar that works with your overall business. The best way to create reader loyalty is to deliver worthwhile content on a regular business.

Inspire action: Give your readers plenty of opportunities to take action, which should be one of the goals of your electronic communications. From promotions to downloadable content, to surveys or invitation for events, your newsletter can be a great way to prompt your subscribers to email, pick up the phone or stop by your brick-and-mortar shop. One of the most important features to include is the simple opt-in or forward button. And don’t forget an unsubscribe option, which is required by most online communications publishers. Add in an incentive for your readers to forward your newsletter and you’ve created a win-win situation for you and your subscribers.

Electronic newsletters are an effective and inexpensive way to stay in touch with your customer base, as well as create content that can be re-purposed on blogs, direct mailers, or other communication collateral. With proper planning, your e-newsletter can be one of your most valuable tools and one that your customers will actually look forward to opening!

At my heart, I’m a writer. Whether writing this column, press releases, corporate sponsorship letters, web content or even those persnickety 140-character messages for Twitter, I work to craft my words that clearly communicate my client’s message, or my own thoughts and beliefs.

Perhaps my bias is showing, but I’m of the belief that solid writing is one of the most important skills in creating and sustaining your business success. I’m amazed at how many business owners I come across who feel uncomfortable putting pen to paper, or fingertips to keyboard, to articulate their business vision to the customers, or to themselves.

For four years, I taught composition, creative writing and research-based writing at Front Range Community College. My students ranged from those just graduated from high school to those returning to school to either finish a degree they began years before, as well as those who were seeking to develop a new career track. The biggest lesson I learned during this experience was that the majority of my students had a high level of sophistication in their ideas, but needed support in learning to organize and articulate those ideas. Too often, running a business can take so much time and energy that the reason why we’ve taken this leap of faith is not only for our hopes and dreams, but for the ones we love. Remember to make time for your relationships, from your spouse, partner and friends.
Yes, sacrifice is part of running one’s own business, but that doesn’t mean you have to undervalue your skills, education and experience to get a foot in the door. Remember that your business must sustain itself (and you) and always weigh the larger cost of working for too little. Establish a firm and competitive set of fees from the moment you hang up your shingle. Your customers, clients and competitors will appreciate it and understand the value they are happy to pay for.

Finding your purpose in your work is a great gift, but making that gift into a viable career takes a considerable amount of time and energy. Remember to make sure you leave some of that time and energy for the most important part of your business – you. Just finished a long and hard project?
Face it. These days, everyone, including your dog and cat, has a personal brand. We can attribute this to the overtly social (aka, online) way in which we conduct our lives and our businesses. As well, with the upswing in entrepreneurial ventures run by one or two people, establishing a strong personal brand has become a skill as important as a solid business plan.

What is a personal brand? According to Tom Peters, who was writing about the topic way back in 1997, “it’s time for me — and you — to take a lesson from the big brands, a lesson that’s true for anyone who’s interested in what it takes to stand out and prosper in the new world of work.”

Regardless of age, regardless of position, regardless of the business we happen to be in, all of us need to understand the importance of branding. We are CEOs of our own companies: Me Inc. To be in business today, our most important job is to be head marketer for the brand called “You.”

Can you put your personal brand into one sentence?

The idea of mission and vision statements has become watered down and all of us have seen way too many generic ones that might sound good, but leave you scratching your head wondering, but what do they do? Instead, I’d like to challenge you to write your sentence, an idea I came across from Bill Taylor, a blogger with the Harvard Business Review.

Taylor writes about Clare Booth Luce, the playwright and journalist, who said in regards to American presidents, and in particular, in a challenge to the young JFK’s presidency: “A great man is one sentence.” She posed the following challenge: “What was to be his sentence?”

This example, and the way Taylor applies it to business, made me stop: “What a powerful question — not just for great presidents, but also for great companies.”

Taylor refers to a number of highly successful organizations that have been successful because they’ve been able to craft a specific and well-crafted sentence. He cites Southwest Airlines, Google and other Fortune 500 business that have been able to focus their mission, vision and strategy into a strong and defining idea.

“Time and again, as I’ve gotten to know companies that are winning big in tough industries, I’ve been struck by the clarity and simplicity of the one idea that drives them — their version of Luce’s sentence,” he writes.

Here’s a simple writing exercise that can help free up the creative juices and get you thinking about your personal brand, as well as honing the skills you’ll need to communicate them to your customers. Write down as many adjectives you can that best describe your business, services, products and brand. From this list, highlight the top three adjective traits and begin to craft your business sentence. You might end up with one, two or more, but the key is to let the creativity flow unedited — you’ll be shaping this down to one or two sentences, one of which will be purely for your own internal use, and one that will be for outside world.

Do you know who your ideal customer base is? If not, it’s time to find out.

This exercise in segmented market research is an excellent way to define who you will serve best and which customer bases will bring out your strengths and let you succeed. Again, creativity is the key here, so create your ideal customers as if they were characters in a movie or your favorite TV show, or a fictional Facebook profile.

Include the following information as a starting point, but again, don’t let this list confine you:

Age; gender; education; geographic region; car he or she drives; house, apartment, townhouse, etc.; relationship and family status; recreational activities; religious affliation (if any); last book read; last movie seen; pets or no pets; coffee or tea?; vanilla or chocolate?

You get the picture. The more information you “gather” on your ideal customer base, the more you’ll be able to find your customers.

The long and the short of it is, learn from the big companies with successful and long-standing brands — study their methodologies, what’s been written about them and see how you can translate their lessons learned, successful and failed, into solid personal brand building tools for your business.

After all, if you can’t describe your business, how can you expect your customers to?

Starting a blog is a great way to begin to define your personal brand and build your business. Most business people who blog on a regular basis are apt to be on top of the latest research and trends in their industry, and regular blogging is a terrific way to hone your marketing skills, not to mention building a strong lead generation tool and recyclable marketing content.

But maintaining a blog can be an overwhelming task if not planned out and implemented properly. Mindful blogging can be just the ticket to take your business blog, one of the most powerful (and cost-effective) marketing tools around. to an entirely new level, with focus, planning and purpose.

Focus: Most successful blogs have a specific focus that can be viewed by a wide variety of audiences. Define your purpose: educate, inform, state an opinion or be known as an expert?

1. Educate: You’re writing a blog because you have experience in your field and because you have something to share and to say. What can others learn from you?

2. Inform: This is slightly different than educating — To inform is to share not only your knowledge, but the knowledge of others who have helped to educate you. Links, articles, white papers, videos and podcasts can provide a wealth and variety of useful information that will get associated with you because it was shared by you.

3. State your mind: One of the joys of blogging is having free reign to say what’s on your mind. However, tread with care, especially if you’re using the blog for professional purposes. Rule of thumb: opine away, but do so with the intent of sparking a dialogue and to get people talking (and blogging) positively about you.

4. Expert status: A focused approach to blogging will help you define yourself as an expert in your field. To further help establish your status as an expert in your field, link your posts to your LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter pages to reach as wide an audience as possible. In LinkedIn, there is a section dedicated to industry-specific questions which are worth scrolling through and when it’s appropriate, answer with authority, and with a link back to you blog. As well, educating, informing and stating your mind will all work together to bolster your expert status.

Plan: The more you plan your blog posts, the better. Establish a realistic calendar you can meet each week, as well as a way to follow up on analyzing your metrics. Aim for a 1-2 times a week posting and remember, brevity can be your best friend! Find an interesting article to post, or video, rather than relying on you as the sole content creator. Also create a posting calendar for engaging in other people’s blogs, which is a best practice to gather momentum back toward your site.

Have a Purpose: Keep your purpose clear and simple. Don’t try to do or say too much in any given post and keep the purpose connected to your larger business plan.

Delegate: If you’re a business owner with more than one employee, engage your staff to share their knowledge and expertise. If you’re a solo warrior, invite a colleague to be a guest blogger on your site, and ask to do the same on theirs. While a strong voice is central to a good blog, a variety of who tells the story of your business can also provide another way to communicate your business’s brand to your customers.
Action steps:

1. Posting Calendar: Create a three month posting calendar for your blog, one that you can realistically commit to and one that won’t ruin your health, well-being or relationships.

2. Find a Blog week: Dedicate this next week to finding at least one like-minded blog in your industry and start posting

3. Share: If you haven’t already pushed out your blog to your social media sites, now’s the best time to do it, so that you build your in-house audience from the beginning and ask them to help you spread the word.

Next column: De-mystifying your personal brand.

Running your own business, especially a small business, can sometimes be a lonely endeavor. From the first spark that sets your business in motion, to the day-to-day operations, it often seems like you spend a great deal of time with yourself, your idea, and it can be difficult to feel connected to the larger business community.

While a single-minded focus is always important in achieving success, it’s equally important to learn the fine art of B2B collaboration, where businesses can share resources, knowledge and provide professional support. What does this kind of B2B collaborative energy look like?

Resources:

· Staffing: You need additional staffing, but can’t afford a full-time employee. Your next door office mate has the same problem. Why not pool your human resources and job share one full time person into two part time jobs? Share your human resources needs and you’ll be surprised at the wealth of staffing knowledge your network has to share.

· Marketing: Hard economic times have caused marketing budgets to be cut back, but this could a great opportunity to generate B2B collaboration. Talk to the other businesses on your block about holding monthly round robin events, from lunch and learns, to after hours, and promote each other. Bringing traffic to any business is good for all business.

Knowledge:

· Barter: You’re a CPA and your business next-door neighbor is a photographer. She needs tax advice and you need a new business portrait. Get the picture? Bartering can be an excellent way to help spread positive word of mouth about your business, as well as getting much needed services. But set some guidelines so that you don’t barter your business away, and to make sure that both you and your barter partner feel that the trade is equitable.

· Share what you know: Invite another business on your block to learn about what you do and ask them to do the same, and ask them to bring some friends, colleagues and staff. Beyond getting to strut your stuff, you’ll gain valuable presentation skills.

Professional Support:

· I’m always sad when I see a local business close their doors and when it happens, I wonder if it could have been avoided. If you need support for your business, ask for it. Better yet, set up a monthly B2B meet-up specifically to see how you and the other businesses in your network are doing and whether the news is good or bad, rally to support and bolster.

Collaboration can be difficult for those who like to work alone, or who are more introverted in their work style. Luckily, in Longmont, there are many kinds of opportunities for B2B collaboration, where small business owners can connect, network, and collaborate. Here are just a few you can take advantage of right in our backyard:

Longmont collaboration opportunities:

· Networking Solutions with Rose Chamberlain

· Longmont Area Chamber of Commerce

· Longmont Downtown Development Association

· Local Meet-ups

· Or start your own!

Whether you like to attend before or after-hours gatherings, or join in more formalized business associations, you’re bound to find a chance to strengthen your business bonds, increase visibility and generate overall interest in your business, as well as support the health and well-being of a strong local business community.
