GOLDEN — The Niwot girls lost more than a game Tuesday night.
Minutes after the Cougars dropped a 52-47 decision to Golden in their 4A state tournament opener, NHS coach Terri Ward told her team that she is retiring from coaching.
Ward has coached for 20 years at Niwot.
“I`ve thought about it for the last couple of years,” Ward said. “But then we`d start summer stuff and get into the fall, and I`d want to coach another year.”
But heading into this season, Ward began to think itwas time.
“I really had fun with this group,” Ward said. “They`re really a good bunch of kids and I really enjoyed this season.
“I just thought it was a good time to go out with this crew. I`m going out because I want to go out. No one`s asking me to leave — and maybe that`s the best way to go.”
The Cougars came close to extending Ward`s career for another game Tuesday, rallying from a 29-16 halftime deficit to close the gap to five late in the game.
Katy Hedlund led NHS with 18 points and Rachel Haisfield added 11 as Niwot finished the season 10-14.
