LAFAYETTE – The Centaurus and Longmont High girls basketball teams moved on in the Class 4A state tournament and will face each other tonight in a third round match up.
No. 4-seeded Longmont knocked off No. 5 Evergreen 47-32 at Centaurus High School in the early game Friday night.
“We came out a little tight in that first quarter,” Longmont coach Jay Darien said afterwards. “Once we loosened up, things were good.”
Down 11-5 after the first quarter, the Trojans (20-3) gathered themselves and took a 16-13 lead at the half.
The players looked determined as they came out in the second half and made quick work of the Cougars (18-6). Senior Hannah Kingsbury led the team with 10 points in what turned out to be a low scoring affair.
“I think everybody contributed how they had to,” Kingsbury said of the win.
Looking on to Centaurus, the Trojans know they will need to be ready.
“We`re excited,” Darien said of Longmont`s next opponent. “We`re in a round of 16. They didn`t have Nikki (Lindow) in the first game. It`s going to be a great atmosphere (tonight).”
In the late game No. 1-seeded Centaurus (20-3) put on a strong tune-up performance, beating No. 8 Moffat County (12-12) 56-36 as the Warriors solidified the expected rematch of an early season game.
The Trojans defeated Centaurus handily 65-44 back on Jan. 6 and will have to go into a hostile environment at Centaurus tonight.
On Friday, Centaurus played team basketball and jumped out to a commanding 34-15 lead at the half behind Maurissa Ortega`s 12 first-half points. She was the leading scorer on the night with 17, while Kyra Peterson chipped in a workmanlike 16 running the point.
“(This game) gives us confidence,” Peterson said after her team advanced. “Everyone contributed.”
Centaurus knows that tonight will be a tough challenge as it looks to avenge its loss to Longmont earlier this season.
“We didn`t want to overlook Moffat County,” Centaurus coach Jeff Jackson said. “We`ve been practicing for two games. I thought our defensive energy led to our offensive possessions. We know that every game from here on out will be tough. We`ve seen Longmont before. It`s going to be a battle.”
The tip-off between the two teams is set for 7 p.m. at Centaurus.
