Lions run to league football crown

By Ryan Thorburn, For the Ledger

LYONS — There goes Frazier! There goes Frazier! There goes Frazier!

Alex Frazier didn`t feel like going down in the heavyweight bout for the Metro North Conference belt.

The Lyons` senior running back rushed for three touchdowns and 71 yards on only eight carries as the Lions knocked out rival Denver Lutheran 34-0 on Friday night.

Lyons, which will host a Class 1A playoff game two weeks from today after clinching the conference title, will use its regular-season finale against struggling South Park to clean up some minor weaknesses.

“We`re always looking for a perfect game,” Lyons coach John Nichols said. “It`s not attainable, but you still look for it.”

The Lions (7-1, 5-0) threw two interceptions, committed five penalties and missed some tackles, otherwise the score would have been even more lopsided.

Still, after pulling last year`s game at Denver Lutheran out 14-13, thanks to a blocked kick, Lyons definitely made a statement in this matchup.

“It feels really good to be conference champs,” Frazier said. “As a senior I think we wanted to come out and show everybody that we`re the real deal and not a fluke. I just felt like this was a team we needed to prove that we could come out and dominate.”

The Lights (5-3, 4-1) had a chance to cut into a 20-0 deficit with a first-and-goal in the final minute of the first half. However, a key sack and then an interception by Cameron Walker on fourth down kept the visitors scoreless.

Denver Lutheran turned the ball over four times, losing three of its four fumbles. Lyons fumbled twice but recovered both loose balls.
