LONGMONT — With four minutes and 48 seconds left in the first quarter, the Skyline Falcons fans stood up, applauded and chanted the name of quarterback Geary Bakewell. The problem was, Bakewell had just fallen prey to injury.
On 3rd-and-6 at his own 5-yard line, Bakewell scrambled for 1 yard before being taken down awkwardly near the Longmont Trojans sidelines. Bakewell was down on the ground lying on his back for about 15 minutes Friday before being placed on a stretcher and taken to Longmont United Hospital.
“We just know he took a hard hit and he fell on his head,” Skyline coach Kevin Rice said. “As far as we know he has movement in everything, but they just want to take some precautions and get him checked out. We have him deep in our prayers and hope everything is the best.
“He heard (the chant) and I made sure he heard that. Our fans have been really positive supporting us this year. We`re really grateful for that. That was a nice, positive thing our kids did.”
Longmont coach Doug Johnson added, “We were hoping it was precautionary. I think he`s OK, but we prayed for him on the 50.”
Regardless of the emotional moment, the Falcons stayed winless on the season as they fell 33-15 to the Trojans in Class 4A Northern League action.
Skyline`s fortune turned once play resumed.
A short punt allowed the Trojans (6-1, 5-1) to take over at Skyline`s 31.
Three plays later, Longmont quarterback Jake Johnson found Drew Edwards for 24 yards before being brought down at Skyline`s 5.
Two plays later, Christian Gunderson took the pitch and ran straight up the gut for a 2-yard touchdown to give Longmont the 7-0 lead.
After Skyline (0-7, 0-5) went three-and-out and punted to Longmont, Johnson hit a wide open Dawlton Cole for a 45-yard score to make it 14-0 and the rout was on.
Johnson finished 11-of-20 for 181 yards with two touchdowns and an interception that was returned for a touchdown before sitting out the fourth quarter with a 30-7 lead.
“He did great,” Edwards said. “He got the ball where it needed to be and it was real good.”
