County launches survey about cyclist-motorist relations

In a continuing effort to make peace between motorists and cyclists who share the roads, Boulder County has launched an online survey asking for ideas about how the two groups can better work together.

Boulder County is working to resolve problems between cyclists and motorists in canyon areas.

The “road code” survey, available at www.surveymonkey.com/s/roadcode until March 24, was developed by the Boulder County Mountain Canyon-Cyclist-Motorist working group. The group, organized last fall amid rising roadside tensions, is tasked with improving relationships between cyclist and motorists.

The survey asks a variety of questions, including why people choose to bike in Boulder’s canyon roads and how it makes them feel when motorists honk at them, are rude or drive dangerously.

The survey is designed to help the group and the county better understand how to educate and inform canyon roadway users about safety and reduced tensions between cyclists and mororists through the use of updated road signs, codes and other regulations.

A pilot program of education and outreach is being implimented at Left Hand Canyon, James Canyon and Lee Hill Drive. County officials say the program could be adapted for other areas of Boulder County.
