Electricity customers to pay 9.3 percent more in 2010

The Longmont City Council has approved an overall electric rate increase of 8.3 percent beginning Jan. 1, including a residential increase of 9.3 percent.

The adjustment includes a 6.2 percent wholesale power increase from Longmont Power & Communications’ electric power provider, a 1 percent hike in the franchise fee LPC pays to the city’s general fund and increased environmental program costs.

The council also approved a $4 monthly credit for low-income seniors and disabled customers to minimize the impact of the rate increase.
