A Longmont-based ReStore for Habitat for Humanity of the St. Vrain Valley is trying to make up this week for a reported theft over the weekend of its safe, organization officials said Thursday.
Cholla Nicoll, resource developer for the Longmont-based Habitat for Humanity, said officials believe someone entered the store Sunday or Monday — when the business was closed — and stole a safe that contained $5,000. There were no signs of forced entry, Nicoll said, and when employees returned on Tuesday, they found the back door unlocked.
“We’re not sure how that happened,” she said.
Nothing else was missing from the store, which sells used building materials and home furnishings and uses the proceeds to build homes in the community.
“This will definitely set us back,” Nicoll said. “We depend on those donations — that’s how we run.”
The $5,000 is half the week’s income for the store, she said.
“And that all just walked out the door,” Nicoll said. “The goal is to build homes, and when we lose money like that — that’s a kitchen we don’t get to put in.”
