History of Longmont, Colorado

Longmont got its start in 1871 as the Chicago-Colorado Colony. By 1885, it became an official city. With the railroad arriving in 1877, farming and trade took off, laying the foundation for the community we know today.

The Longmont Ledger has been part of this community since 1879, when it launched just after a major fire downtown. It started as a small local paper, and grew steadily throughout Longmont’s early rise as an agricultural hub.

After it changed hands intermittently and ultimately stopped publishing for a season, we’re proud to bring the Longmont Ledger back again, in a digital and community-focused format.
